Getting a US passport can be an exciting time in a person’s life. By holding this document, a person has the ability to travel to many places around the world knowing that they will be able to safely return to the United States of America as they wish. There are many important steps to take when filling out the initial application for the book and the card.

Application Process

To make the application process smooth and quick, a person can prepare all of the documentation that they will need to accompany their application. When a person comes prepared to the bureau, there is less chance for problems to arise during the process. Make a list of all of the documents that need to be provided in order to make sure that the process will run smoothly. This process is a little different if you’re trying to renew US online passport.

Citizenship

When someone goes to the office to complete their application, they will be required to show proof of their citizenship within the United States of America. A certified birth certificate, a naturalization certificate, or a passport that has been issued previously are all acceptable forms of proof of citizenship in the United States of America. These types of evidence are called primary evidence. If primary evidence cannot be provided to the office, then one is allowed to use secondary evidence to prove that they are legitimate United States citizens.

Evidence

If primary evidence cannot be obtained, an applicant is welcome to provide secondary evidence of citizenship in the United States. The secondary evidence is made up of five separate categories. The categories are delayed birth certificates, early public records, letter or no record, birth affidavit, or a foreign birth document.

Federal Forms

After the applicant has complied all of the necessary identification documents that will be asked of them, it is time to move on to the actual application. The United States passport application is also known as Form DS-11. There are two ways to complete Form DS-11, either on the government’s website, or by hand in the application office. Basic identification information will be asked on the form. The basic identification information includes name, contact information and a physical description of the applicant.

Passport Agent

After form DS-11 or the application is filled out, it needs to be taken to the appropriate distribution office. Applying in person will require that the appropriate identification is made available. Appropriate identification includes a valid driver’s license or state identification card, a naturalization certificate, previously issued passport documentation or a current government or military identification card.

Fees

To expedite the process, a person’s application needs to be combined with the appropriate fees. In 2011, the price for an adult care and book costs one hundred sixty dollars. This figure comes from the execution fee costing twenty-five dollars added to the application fee which is one hundred and forty dollars.

Professional Photos

Providing an efficient photo that meets all standard requirements is necessary to complete the application. The agency requires that the photo is printed in color on photo quality paper. The size of the applicant’s face in the photo should be at least an inch in size so that the person is easily identifiable. The entire photo should be two inches on each side so that it will fit in the book.
